Long Weekend

December 10, 2007 By: Curtis Category: blogging, braces 2 Comments →

This was a very long weekend for me. I had the braces adjusted Friday afternoon, so I was getting used to the wires. In addition, I was given some wonderfully fun headgear to wear at night to help move things along quicker. The problem is trying to learn to sleep with the thing on. Being a side sleeper, having something stick out of my mouth and up the side of my head makes thing difficult.

Needless to say, the sleep I did get this weekend wasn’t all that good. One side effect I guess is that I nearly have the new website up and going. It wasn’t nearly as difficult as I expected. So, sometime later today I’ll switch the feed over to the new site. In the mean time, you can still go visit the new digs (I’ll post this one over there as well) and leave me some comments if you like.

It’ll be fun having some more control over the design and layout. Hope to see everyone over there.

Feeling a little self-conscious

August 07, 2007 By: Curtis Category: braces, my life No Comments →

I’ve been in the process of getting braces over the last few months. I’ve had the molds, the x-rays and even the spacers. The bands went on the back teeth in early July and Friday I just got the 4 teeth removed that needed to be gone before they put on the rest of the brackets and wires.

Now, all this is pretty normal stuff… if you’re 12. Me, being a 32 year old professional who is in charge of projects and meetings at work as well as teaching graduate courses of the evening, makes things a little different.

So far, the tooth removal is most annoying. I’ve found that one of the teeth they took out happens to be almost directly in front of my tongue when I’m talking. Those other front teeth had shifted over and need to be moved back to their proper places. Now, this missing tooth has made it very difficult to pronounce my “s” and “th” sounds. That’s really making me self-conscious when it comes to speaking in front of people; which is something I’m expected to do on a regular basis.

I’ve got to set up a new project kick-off meeting for sometime in the next few days. I’m dreading introducing myself while I speak like this (first impressions you know). To top it off, the brackets and wires actually go on tomorrow morning, so I’ll have even more stuff in my mouth to get used to before that meeting. Lucky me!
